Recently, Dr. Michelle Robin, owner of the successful Your Wellness Connection, spoke with Dynamic Chiropractic magazine about her use of infrared sauna therapy for pain relief in her business. Dr. Robin uses Sunlighten infrared saunas for chronic pain patients at her wellness center in suburban Kansas City.

Dr. Robin’s patients often come to her seeking relief from chronic pain. She told Dynamic Chiropractic that she “found that using a full-spectrum infrared sauna in my office as part of a treatment plan for pain has contributed to my patients’ pain relief exponentially while also boosting revenue for my practice.”

Before recommending infrared sauna therapy to her patients, Dr. Robin looked at research on the efficacy of infrared heat. And she continues to read new studies regarding the benefits of infrared as well.

She found the following articles to be interesting and informative:

• In a 2006 double-blind, placebo-controlled study in the Journal of Pain Research and Management, researchers found that infrared heat therapy was able to reduce chronic low back pain by 50 percent over seven weeks, with zero negative side effects.

• In a compelling study in a 2002 issue of the Spine Journal, a researcher at the New Jersey Medical School found that heat therapy was more effective than analgesics for low back pain relief.

• In a 2008 study in the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, researchers found that reductions in both pain and stiffness were statistically significant after only four weeks of treatment for both rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

• The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (1992) reported pain reduction and increased ability in elderly patients suffering from degenerative osteoarthritis (DOA) of the knee who were treated with infrared heat.

Sunlighten Infrared Sauna at Cardin Center for Wellness

We recently received a new review of our Sunlighten infrared saunas from two terrific health care practitioners at the Cardin Center for Wellness. Dr. Ralph Cardin and Dr. Heather Cardin have practiced together since 1998. Their wellness center focuses on whole body health, utilizing chiropractic, acupuncture and nutritional counseling. And one of their most-recommended services is infrared sauna therapy.

The Cardin Center uses a Sunlighten Signature III infrared sauna. They recommend it to their chiropractic patients and also to the skin care clients who see Kylie, an esthetician who operates out of the Center.

While they offer sessions from 10 to 30 minutes, 90% of all those who use the sauna choose the 30 minute sessions.

Are you a fan of hot yoga, power vinyasa yoga or Bikram yoga? Did you know that you can use Sunlighten infrared heaters to create a hot yoga space for yourself at home?

Hot yoga is believed to help the body sweat out toxins while allowing the practitioner to safely come deeper into asanas (poses or stretches). The room temperature for a hot yoga class in a studio generally ranges from 30˚ to 50˚ C (85˚ to 122˚ F).

In the various forms of hot yoga, the room is heated to warm the muscles and induce sweat. Warm muscles stretch further and with reduced risk of injury (great for yoga poses!). Because stretching is an effective way to increase flexibility, hot yoga can help improve range of motion, prevent injuries, and help heal from previous injuries.

The heat increases the pulse and the body burns more calories in its efforts to stay cool while exercising. Heat dialates capillaries, distributing oxygen more effectively to muscles, glands, organs and other tissues, helping to remove toxins.

Hot yoga can also assist with weight loss, exercise and stress reduction – all in one session. Because hot yoga increases the pulse rate, the body works to regulate its temperature, increasing calorie expenditure without the impact on joints of other higher impact exercise.

Exercise, deep breathing, and meditation have been shown to reduce stress levels, and hot yoga combines all three.

While some of our smaller infrared saunas might not be spatially conducive to the performance of many yoga poses, our three-person, four-person and five-person models all have ample space for a single person to pose. Even the one-person and two-person models can host some modified or more static hot yoga poses.
